Thermo-Auricular Therapy – Hopi Candles

What is Thermo-Auricular Therapy – Known as Hopi Candles
Candle-ing is a safe non-invasive therapy applied to the ears. It is an ancient and entirely natural therapy with roots in the civilisations of ancient Greece, where it was used for cleansing, purifying and healing both on the spiritual and practical level.
The candles I use are ‘BiØsun’ manufactured, as these are CE registered and of a high standard. They are not the normal candle that most people recognise. They are long, thin tubes constructed out of a natural fabric and infused with aromatherapy oils and coated with a very thin film of bees wax. There is also a small filter to keep ear wax or condensate away from the ear.
How the name Thermo-Auricular© Therapy came about
Sue Maunsell, together with another therapist, was asked by BIØSUN® to compile the teaching manual suitable for British therapists to a standard that would meet the stringent criteria of the insurers and accredited organizations, also, to bestow the therapy a copyrighted name to be used within the UK.
The History of Hopi Candles
The therapy was also used by the Egyptians, Chinese, East Indians and Tibetans over three thousand years ago.
More recently, candle treatments were used by the Hopi Indians – hence the more common name of ‘Hopi candles’. They used the candles in medicinal ceremonies and initiations to clear negative energies from the head and aura.
Today, the Hopi Indians are divided into traditional – which preserve ancient lands and customs, and new – who work with outsiders. The Hopi Indians today love their traditions, arts, and land, but also love the modern American Life.
I have been lucky enough to visit the Grand Canyon where their land can be viewed from a place called ‘Hopi Point’.
What a ‘hopi’ or Thermo-Auricular treatment involves
A client is advised not to wear hairspray or perfume before the treatment. A consultation will be taken to find about their health and reason for having the therapy.
The first action I take, is to examine the inside of the clients ear canal with an Otoscope, this is the instrument that a doctor would use. I use the Otoscope to check for any perforations or inflammation in the ear.
The client is asked to lie on a treatment couch and I start with an acupressure type massage to the head and face. This is very effective for lymphatic and sinus drainage, the main problem that causes discomfort. After the massage, the client lies on one side for the candle to be positioned gently in the ear. It is a very relaxing and therapeutic feeling. The candle takes approximately 15 minutes to burn down to the red marker – about one third of the way down the candle. This process is then repeated on the other ear. The whole session takes approximately one hour.
How ‘hopi’ or Thermo-Auricular Candles work
When the candle is lit, the flame warms the air within the candle, which in turn warms the air inside the ear. It is a very gentle warmth, undetectable by the client. The candle gently warms any excess ear wax and draws it up into the body of the candle, in front of the filter. This is what is called ‘the chimney effect’.
